Tanzanite: A Rare Gem of Tanzania

Tanzanite, rarer than diamonds, is a gemstone found exclusively in Tanzania. Known for its captivating trichroic property, Tanzanite displays three colors—blue, burgundy, and brown—simultaneously in its raw state. The stone’s hallmark blue and violet hues emerge through natural underground heating or artificial heat treatment, both of which clear the brownish tones and reveal Tanzanite’s true brilliance. History

Tanzanite, formed 585 million years ago during the Ediacaran Period, originated through tectonic activity and intense heat near what is now Mount Kilimanjaro. The gemstone can only be sourced from the Simanjiro District of Tanzania’s Manyara Region. Its mining area spans just 7 kilometers by 2 kilometers near the Mererani Hills.

The stone was discovered in 1967 by Manuel de Souza, a part-time prospector. Maasai herders had found the striking blue crystals while tending livestock, initially mistaken for Peridot. De Souza consulted geologists and sent samples to the Geological Institute of America, which identified Tanzanite as a new gem variety.

Tiffany & Co. named the gemstone “Tanzanite,” replacing its original name, “blue-violet zoisite,” and introduced it to the global market in 1968. In 2002, Tanzanite became an official December birthstone, a distinction conferred by the American Gemstone Trade Association.

As reserves dwindle, Tanzanite’s future remains uncertain. Once fully mined, its rarity will elevate its status as a historic gem coveted by collectors worldwide.
