Discovered in 1847 by German geologist Ernst Friedrich Glocker, Sphalerite derives its name from the Greek word sphaleros, meaning “treacherous”—a nod to its tendency to be mistaken for Galena. Miners often referred to it as “steel jack,” “black jack,” or “rosin jack”, and despite its deceptive appearance, it became the primary ore for zinc, which is now the fourth most-used metal worldwide.

Sphalerite is often found alongside Galena, Pyrite, Chalcopyrite, Calcite, Dolomite, Fluorite, and Rhodochrosite, forming in botryoidal masses, cubes, or dodecahedral crystals. It’s both pyroelectric and triboluminescent, meaning it can generate an electric charge when heated or cooled—and may even glow when crushed.
