Pietersite is a brecciated, fibrous variety of Chalcedony composed primarily of Quartz with embedded amphibole mineral fibers. Its structure is related to Tiger Eye and Hawk’s Eye materials, but Pietersite is particularly admired for its fragmented, swirling appearance created when fibrous material was naturally broken and later re-cemented.
Pietersite was first described from material discovered in Namibia in the early 1960s and was named by Sid Pieters in honor of his father, Louis Pieters. Today, commercial Pietersite is especially associated with material from Namibia and China.
Its storm-like appearance has inspired the popular nickname “Tempest Stone.” In modern metaphysical traditions, Pietersite is associated with courage, determination, transformation, focus, intuition, adaptability, confidence, and maintaining direction through change.
