 Frequently called the “The Guardian Stone”, Obsidian is a volcanic glass that is formed with lava cools rapidly with minimal crystal growth, which classifies this stone as a mineraloid. This stone can be found anywhere in the world but is only found near volcanoes or where volcanic activity has occurred in the past. Obsidian comes in a variety of colors, including black, black with white, brown, green, red, red with black, orange, yellow, silver sheened, gold sheened and rainbow. 

History

The “Stone of Obsius” received its name from a prominent Roman Explorer, Obsius, who was thought to be the first to discover this type of stone in Ethiopia. In reality, Obsidian has been in use throughout all of history with artifacts dating 1.7 million years in the Melka Kunture site of Ethiopia.  It was used commonly during the Stone Age to produce sharp blades and arrowheads.   In ancient Rome and ancient Greece, it was often used as a mirror.  It many ancient civilizations, Obsidian was seen as a symbol of power. The Mayan priests used the stone to predict the future.  During the Middle Ages, the stone was believed to fight off demons, heal wounds and alleviate pain. Obsidian was a symbol of Tezcatlipoca, a central deity whose name means “smoking mirror”, a reference to the volcanic glass.  This glass has been used in Shamanic ceremonies to remove physical disorder.  Many cultures have the belief that Black Obsidian has the gift of prophecy.
