History

Larvikite has a long history as it was formed approximately 295-300 million years ago during the Permian period.  The stone was at the origin of the Oslo region’s formation during the breakup of Pangea.  Larvikite crystalizes by subvolcanic areas around 30km below the Earth’s surface.  Its name originates from the Larvik Fjord region in Norway where it was first discovered.  Not overly well known, Larvikite is an intriguing stone that possesses unique attributes and a rich history of metaphysical beliefs.  It is a member of the Feldspar family and belongs to the monzonite group of igneous rocks.  It is composed of other feldspar minerals, such as Labradorite.  Larvikite is characterized by its dark bluish, silver, gray to black color and has an irresistible iridescent blue, silver, gray or green flash.  This combination gives the stone its mesmerizing iridescence known as the schiller effect. Its scaled production began in 1884 and since, the stone has reached every corner of the globe.  Larvikite is associated with Norway due to its abundant deposits.  It can also be found in a few other locations worldwide such as Canada, Russia, United States and Finland, although in much smaller quantity.  It is often used in jewelry, opulent countertops, monuments, sculptures, interior décor, healing crystals, and architectural features.  Although Larvikite was formed millions of years ago, due to its complex mining process and because official mining did not begin until 1884, there is not much noted regarding ancient history.  It is known to have been used by the ancient Norse people in carvings of decorative objects, and the indigenous people of North America used the stone for making tools and weapons.

Proper Care

To cleanse, use lukewarm water and mild soap with a soft cloth.  You may place it next to or on selenite to spiritually cleanse as well as sage/smudging.  Avoid using harsh chemicals or cleaners as they could damage the stone.

To charge, place in/on a selenite plate or bowl, or place in the light of the full moon. To amplify Larvikite’s energy, place Larvikite near Clear Quartz, wear with Clear Quartz, or place on a Clear Quartz plate.
