History

Dioptase, an uncommon and rare crystal, was first documented in 1797 by Rene Just Hauy, a French minerologist.  He coined its name from the Greek words “dia” (through) and “optasia” (vision).  Discovered at the end of the 18th century at the Altyn-Tyube mine in Kazakhstan, it was originally thought to be emerald.  It was initially sent to Russia for analysis and found to be a completely different and new gem.  Dioptase rates as a 5 on the Mohs scale, can be transparent to translucent, and has a vitreous lustre.  It reflects light with a higher intensity than glass.  It is formed as a secondary mineral in copper deposits created by weathering and oxidation of limestone or calcite formations.  Dioptase is often found alongside Chrysocolla and is commonly associated with other secondary copper minerals such as azurite and malachite.  It is currently found in only Kazakhstan, Namibia, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Chile and the United States.  In ancient Egypt, dioptase was known to have adorned the ornate embellishments of the pharaohs symbolizing rebirth and vitality.  During Neolithic times, it was also used as a pigment and was found to have been used on the famous group of pre-pottery ceramic figures of Ain Ghazal from the 9th century (7200 BC) in Jordan.  During the medieval period, as dioptase was spreading across the world, mystics cherished it for its healing properties.

Proper Care

To cleanse, use cool water and mild soap with a soft cloth.  You may place it next to or on selenite to spiritually cleanse as well as sage/smudging.  Avoid using harsh chemicals or cleaners as they could damage the stone.  It is relatively fragile, so do not place it next to items that could damage or scratch it.

To charge, place in/on a selenite plate or bowl, or place in the light of the full moon. Do not leave in elements of extreme heat or humidity for long periods of time.
