Rhodochrosite was first identified in 1813 in the silver mines of present-day Romania and named by German mineralogist Johann Friedrich Ludwig Hausmann. Its name comes from the Greek words rhodon (rose) and chroma (color), reflecting its vibrant pink hues.

In Argentina, Rhodochrosite was rediscovered in the 18th century in abandoned Inca tombs, where it had been used as ornamental jewelry. The Incas believed it was the blood of their ancestral rulers, solidified into stone. This legend earned it the nickname “Rosa del Inca.” Argentina remains one of the world’s largest sources, especially in the San Luis Province, and Rhodochrosite is now the national stone of Argentina and the official state mineral of Colorado.

Its global popularity surged in the 1930s thanks to Franz Mansfeld, who showcased Rhodochrosite carvings at the Leipzig International Fair, introducing its beauty and healing power to the world.
