Tanzanite, formed 585 million years ago during the Ediacaran Period, originated through tectonic activity and intense heat near what is now Mount Kilimanjaro. The gemstone can only be sourced from the Simanjiro District of Tanzania’s Manyara Region. Its mining area spans just 7 kilometers by 2 kilometers near the Mererani Hills.

The stone was discovered in 1967 by Manuel de Souza, a part-time prospector. Maasai herders had found the striking blue crystals while tending livestock, initially mistaken for Peridot. De Souza consulted geologists and sent samples to the Geological Institute of America, which identified Tanzanite as a new gem variety.

Tiffany & Co. named the gemstone “Tanzanite,” replacing its original name, “blue-violet zoisite,” and introduced it to the global market in 1968. In 2002, Tanzanite became an official December birthstone, a distinction conferred by the American Gemstone Trade Association.
