Rainbow Moonstone: The Stone of Intuition & New Beginnings
Rainbow Moonstone is a luminous gemstone admired for its flashes of blue, violet, gold, green, and rainbow-colored light that seem to move across the stone as it turns. Despite its trade name, Rainbow Moonstone is technically a variety of white Labradorite, a member of the feldspar mineral family.
Its captivating flashes, known as labradorescence, are created when light interacts with microscopic layers within the stone. High-quality pieces may display brilliant blue or multicolored flashes against a translucent to milky-white background.
In metaphysical traditions, Rainbow Moonstone is associated with intuition, transformation, new beginnings, emotional balance, spiritual awareness, and feminine energy.
History & Lore
Moonstone has been surrounded by lunar symbolism for centuries. Ancient cultures associated its glowing appearance with the Moon, intuition, cycles, fertility, love, and divine feminine energy.
Rainbow Moonstone became especially popular in modern gemstone and crystal communities because of its dramatic flashes of color.
Although commercially called Moonstone, Rainbow Moonstone is mineralogically more closely related to Labradorite than traditional orthoclase Moonstone. Its colorful optical effect is generally described as labradorescence rather than the classic adularescence associated with traditional Moonstone.
In contemporary spiritual practices, Rainbow Moonstone symbolizes embracing change, trusting intuition, and recognizing the possibilities that come with new beginnings.
