Pietersite is a brecciated, fibrous variety of Chalcedony composed primarily of Quartz with embedded amphibole mineral fibers. Its structure is related to Tiger Eye and Hawk’s Eye materials, but natural fragmentation and re-cementing of the fibrous material contributes to Pietersite’s distinctive swirling appearance.
Pietersite was first described from material discovered in Namibia in the early 1960s and was named by Sid Pieters in honor of his father, Louis Pieters. Commercial Pietersite is particularly associated with Namibia and China.
Because of its turbulent, almost atmospheric appearance, Pietersite is popularly known as the “Tempest Stone.” In modern metaphysical traditions, it is associated with resilience, courage, focus, intuition, transformation, confidence, adaptability, and maintaining a sense of direction when circumstances become unpredictable.
