Obsidian: The Guardian Stone of Truth & Protection

Frequently called “The Guardian Stone,” Obsidian is a powerful volcanic glass formed when lava cools rapidly with minimal crystal growth, classifying it as a mineraloid. Found only near sites of past or present volcanic activity, Obsidian comes in a stunning array of colors: black, black with white, brown, green, red, orange, yellow, silver sheen, gold sheen, rainbow, and more.

History & Cultural Significance

Obsidian derives its name from the Roman explorer Obsius, who was believed to have discovered the stone in Ethiopia. However, its use dates back far earlier—artifacts made of Obsidian have been found at the Melka Kunture site in Ethiopia, dating to 1.7 million years ago. In the Stone Age, it was prized for its sharpness and used to craft blades and arrowheads. Ancient Greeks and Romans fashioned it into mirrors, while Mayan priests used it for divination. In Aztec mythology, Obsidian was sacred to Tezcatlipoca, the “Smoking Mirror” deity. Throughout history, it has symbolized power, prophecy, and spiritual protection, and has been used in shamanic ceremonies to remove energetic blockages and physical disorder.
