Dubbed “The Spiritual Stone”, Larimar is a usually a light blue mineral that has dark undulations and can be translucent or opaque. It can also be found in colors of blue-green, gray or red with white. This semi- hard stone is a type of pectolite or is mostly composed of pectolite. Pectolite is an acid silicate hydrate of sodium and calcium. Pectolite can be found in many locations but the larimar variety of pectolite can only be found in the dormant, volcanic mountain range in the Baoruco Mountain of the Dominican Republic.
History
Legend states that the Larimar was originally discovered in 1916 by Father Miguel Domingo Fuertes Loer of the Barahona Parish. Soon after his find, he requested permission to explore and exploit the mind, but his request was denied and the stone remained hidden for nearly sixty more years. That was until 1974, when a US Peace Corps volunteer, Norman Rilling, and a Dominican Native, Miguel Mendez rediscovered the stone on a beach at the foot of the Bahoruco Mountain range. Dominic Natives believed that the stone came from the sea and they called the gem, blue stone. Mendez took his daughters name Larissa and the Spanish work for sea (Mar) and coined the name, Larimar.
