Larimar is a rare and captivating blue variety of Pectolite, treasured for its dreamy shades of sky blue, turquoise, aqua, blue-green, and white. Its swirling patterns often resemble sunlight reflecting across tropical ocean water, making each piece beautifully unique.

Found commercially in only one region of the world—the Dominican Republic—Larimar has become one of the Caribbean's most recognizable gemstones. Although local stories describe blue stones being known in the Dominican Republic earlier, Larimar's modern history began in the 1970s, when significant deposits were brought to wider attention.

The name Larimar was created by combining “Larissa,” the name of discoverer Miguel Méndez's daughter, with “mar,” the Spanish word for sea. The name beautifully reflects the stone's Caribbean origin and ocean-like appearance.

Larimar is sometimes called the “Caribbean Gemstone” or “Dolphin Stone.” It has also been associated in modern spiritual traditions with Atlantis, although these connections are metaphysical legends rather than established historical or geological facts.

Dominican Republic – Particularly the mountainous region of Barahona Province

Larimar formed through volcanic geological processes, with blue Pectolite occurring within cavities and fractures in volcanic rock.

While ordinary Pectolite occurs in several places around the world, the distinctive blue gem material known commercially as Larimar is associated with the Dominican Republic.

Its limited geographic source contributes significantly to its rarity and desirability.

What Gives Larimar Its Blue Color?

Larimar is a variety of Pectolite, a calcium-sodium silicate mineral.

Ordinary Pectolite is generally white or gray, but Larimar develops its characteristic blue coloration through differences in its mineral chemistry, particularly involving copper.

Its appearance can range from nearly white with faint blue areas to intense Caribbean blue with striking white patterns.

Deep, vibrant blue material with attractive natural patterning is especially prized.
