Labradorite: The Stone of Transformation & Intuition

Labradorite is a mesmerizing feldspar mineral famous for its brilliant flashes of blue, green, gold, yellow, orange, purple, and occasionally pink. Against its typically gray, charcoal, or dark background, these flashes can appear and disappear as the stone moves beneath the light.

This remarkable optical effect is known as labradorescence and gives Labradorite its mysterious, almost otherworldly appearance. In metaphysical traditions, Labradorite is associated with transformation, intuition, protection, spiritual awareness, creativity, self-discovery, and embracing change.

History & Lore

Labradorite was named after the Labrador region of Canada, where European observers documented the stone in the 18th century.

One of the most famous legends surrounding Labradorite comes from the Indigenous peoples of Labrador. Modern retellings describe the Northern Lights as having once been trapped within the rocks along the coast, with their brilliant colors released into the sky and some remaining within Labradorite.

While versions of this story vary, the connection between Labradorite's colorful flashes and the aurora has become an enduring part of its modern lore.

Its shifting colors have also inspired symbolism involving hidden potential, transformation, intuition, mystery, and discovering light within darkness.

Where It's Found

Important sources of Labradorite include:

Canada – Labrador is the stone's historic namesake locality
Madagascar – Famous for highly colorful Labradorite specimens
Finland – Known for exceptional material called Spectrolite
Norway – Produces feldspar with beautiful optical effects
Russia – Source of Labradorite and related feldspar minerals
United States – Labradorite occurs in several geological regions

Labradorite forms primarily in igneous rocks and is a member of the plagioclase feldspar series.

What Causes Labradorescence?

Labradorite's spectacular flashes are not caused by surface coloring or metallic inclusions.

Instead, light interacts with microscopic internal structures within the feldspar, producing interference that creates its characteristic flashes of color.

Depending on the angle of the stone and the direction of the light, the colors may suddenly appear, disappear, or shift dramatically.

This phenomenon is called labradorescence.

Types of Labradorite

Classic Labradorite – Gray to dark material displaying blue, green, gold, or multicolored flashes

Spectrolite – A particularly vivid variety from Finland known for displaying a broad spectrum of colors

Golden Labradorite – Yellow to golden transparent feldspar commonly marketed within the Labradorite family

Rainbow Moonstone – A trade name commonly used for white Labradorite displaying colorful flashes; despite the name, it is technically Labradorite rather than true Moonstone

Avoid: Harsh chemicals, ultrasonic cleaners, steam, and sudden temperature changes
Storage: Keep separately from harder gemstones to prevent scratches
Handling: Protect from drops, impacts, and pressure along natural cleavage planes

Remove Labradorite jewelry before strenuous activity, cleaning, or situations where it may be struck against hard surfaces.
