Fluorite has been revered since antiquity. Ancient Chinese artisans carved it into protective amulets and drinkware—often using green Fluorite as a substitute for Jade. Egyptians sculpted Fluorite into scarabs and deity statues, while Romans believed Fluorite goblets could prevent drunkenness. Numerous Fluorite artifacts were uncovered in Pompeii, attesting to its cultural significance.
The first written record of Fluorite appeared in 1530 by German scientist Georgius Agricola, who noted its usefulness in smelting. In 1797, Carlo Antonio Galeani Napione formally named the mineral.
