Herkimer Diamonds formed over 500 million years ago in dolostone sediment that once lay at the bottom of an ancient sea. Their clear, glassy appearance often features rainbows. Notably, their formation occurs in pockets, free from a surrounding matrix, resulting in their distinctive double-terminated shape.

These quartz crystals were highly prized by Native Americans and settlers alike for their spiritual and practical uses. In 2012, Herkimer Diamonds were designated the official state mineral of New York.
