The mineral Schorl is named after the village in Saxony Germany known as Zschorlau. The name tourmaline derives from the language Sinhalese and refers to red-brownish stones called carnelian. A very common orthorhombic mineral, Calcite is a common element of sedimentary rocks, especially limestone but also found with metamorphic and igneous rocks. Calcite comes from the German word Calcit, a term that originated from the Latin word for lime, Calx. Usually, the color is clear to milky white with a transparent yellow tint, but Calcite can also be yellow, red, orange, blue, pink, brown, gray or green. Due to its widespread availability, calcite is sourced in all locations throughout the world but is commonly produced in the United States, Britain, Belgium, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Peru, Iceland, Romania and Brazil.
History
Limestone is primarily composed of Calcite, so the uses of Calcite are extremely versatile and have been widely used throughout history . The Great Pyramids used limestone blocks as the construction for the enormous tombs of the Pharaohs. The ancient Egyptians carved many items out of the mineral, relating it to their goddess Bast. It has used throughout all cultures as a sculpting stone. Even the great Michalangelo used Calcite when forming his sculptures including his famous masterpiece, David. It was commonly used in many ancient cultures for temple, bathhouses and royalty dwellings in both construction and architecture.
One of the most noteworthy discovers of Calcite is the Iceland Spar. This transparent variety of calcite was believed to be used by the Vikings for navigation. The purity of the crystal provided dual images for beams of light that Vikings would rotate until the beams were of equal brightness, giving them a steady point of reference for their voyage.
During World War II, optical calcite was used for gun sight, bomb sites and anti-aircraft weaponry. Today, it is used in many applications. It is commonly used in optical equipment for multiple purposes. Also, it has a ton of construction benefits as a mix for concrete and cement, a part of Travertine and a cleaning agent for water pollution and soil remediation. It also has infiltrated the pharmaceutical industry as it is commonly a fractional part of the mixture in many medicinal drugs.

Quartz is a hard crystalline mineral composed of silica and is considered the most powerful healing and energy amplifiers on the planet. Derived from the German word, Quarz, it is also the second most abundant mineral in Earth’s crust, only behind feldspar. China, Japan and Russia are the world’s primary producers of quartz, but the mineral can be found and is produced in all areas of the world. There are many different varieties and colors of quartz with distinct energies and special healing properties for each.
History
Quartz has been a central figure in just about all ancient cultures and civilizations. The earliest talismans of the stone date back to 75,000 B.C. Quartz was the most common material used for the mystical substance called maban in Australian Aboriginal Mythology. This substance is what was believed to give the Shaman’s their magical powers. The Ancient Greeks and Romans believed that the crystals, which the Greeks called Krystallos, were pieces of frozen ice that were so hard that they would not melt. The Roman naturalist, Pliny the Elder, was certain that the mineral was ice, but also realized that the quartz revealed prisms of light. In Europe and the Middle East, quartz was the most common gemstone used for jewelry and hardstone carving. In many cultures today, it is still used for spiritual healing and cultural rituals but due to its abundance, it has also been more commercially used for art, glass making, countertops and home decoration, frequency vibration in crystal oscillators, lasers, microscopes, scientific instruments and a variety of electronic devices.
