Its name comes from the Greek words “Helios” (sun) and “Lithos” (stone). It is a feldspar mineral that can include hematite, copper, and goethite. The metallic sparkles within are called aventurescence, caused by reflective inclusions of these minerals. Sunstone is considered rare, found in Canada, the United States, Norway, and India. Oregon named Sunstone its official state gemstone.

Various ancient cultures, including Native Americans, Greeks, Egyptians, and Vikings, highly valued the gem. In ancient Greece, it was believed to have fallen from the sun during a solar eclipse and was a gift from the Gods. Sunstone was a symbol of the sun God Helios (Apollo) and was used in amulets and jewelry to bestow good fortune, prosperity, vitality, and longevity.
