Pietersite was discovered in 1962 by Sid Pieters in Namibia, Africa, and named in honor of his father, Louis Pieters. It is a rare variety of chalcedony, formed through volcanic activity in the fissures of igneous rock. Its mesmerizing chatoyancy and swirling colors—ranging from golden-brown to gray-blue to reddish-brown—make it highly prized among collectors and jewelers.

Pietersite is geologically related to Tiger’s Eye and Hawk’s Eye, but its fibrous structure has been twisted and compressed by tectonic forces, giving it a uniquely chaotic and dynamic appearance. It is also found in the Henan Province of China, though Namibian Pietersite is considered the most vibrant and energetically potent.
