Black Onyx is a variety of Chalcedony, a microcrystalline form of Quartz composed primarily of silicon dioxide (SiO₂). Traditional Onyx is characterized by parallel banding, although much of the uniformly dark material commercially sold as Black Onyx may be dyed or otherwise treated Chalcedony.
Despite its name, Herkimer Diamond is not a diamond. It is a naturally occurring, exceptionally clear variety of double-terminated Quartz (SiO₂) famously associated with Herkimer County, New York. Its natural faceting and brilliant clarity inspired the “diamond” name.
